Effect of Digital-Technology-Based Learning Environment Integrated with Reflective Thinking Activities on College Students’ Learning Motivation

Reflective thinking enables learners to critically examine their experiences and supports Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) by preparing students for meaningful engagement with learning. Despite its recognized importance, structured reflective thinking activities (RTA) remain underutilized in Pakistani higher education, and notable gaps exist in the literature regarding their effectiveness when facilitated through digital technology. This study examined the effect of a digital-technology-based learning environment integrated with RTA on college students' learning motivation, using a true-experimental, pre-test post-test control group design. Thirty female fourth-year students enrolled in an educational psychology course at a public associate college in Punjab were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Over seven weeks, both groups attended one-hour classes incorporating multimedia instructional videos; the experimental group additionally engaged in structured RTA based on Gibbs' Reflective Cycle. Learning motivation was assessed using a researcher-developed, validated 40-item Likert scale instrument (Cronbach's α = 0.82). Results showed no significant baseline difference between groups, but the experimental group demonstrated significantly greater post-test learning motivation than the control group (t(28) = 3.03, p = .005), with a large effect size (Cohen's d = 1.11). These findings indicate that structured RTA, when integrated with digital technology, can meaningfully enhance college students' learning motivation and should be incorporated into higher education instructional practice.
