Abstract

Islam is a universal religion and a comprehensive code of life founded upon the principles of monotheism (Tawheed), justice, morality, and the welfare of humanity. Allah Almighty appointed Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as the final Prophet and Messenger and sent him as a guide for all mankind. After the commencement of his Prophet hood, when he began preaching Islam in Makkah, he faced intense opposition, persecution, and social pressure from the Quraish and other polytheistic tribes. In such delicate and challenging circumstances, the Prophet (PBUH) adopted a highly prudent, gradual, and context-sensitive strategy for the propagation of Islam, in which confidentiality played a fundamental role.

During the initial phase, the message was conveyed within a limited circle; Dar al-Arqam was established as a center for education, training, and religious instruction; newly converted Muslims were provided with intellectual and spiritual development; and the emerging Muslim community was safeguarded from the conspiracies and hostility of its opponents. These measures formed an integral part of the Prophet’s strategic approach. Significant events of the Makkan period, particularly the Migration to Abyssinia (Hijrat e Habsha) and the Pledges of Aqabah, serve as prominent examples of this carefully planned and confidential strategy. Through the migration to Abyssinia, the lives, faith, and religious freedom of Muslims were protected, while the First and Second Pledges of Aqabah were conducted with great caution and discretion. These pledges laid the foundation for the establishment of an Islamic society in Madina and, subsequently, the formation of the Islamic state.

These measures clearly demonstrate that the purpose of confidentiality was not to conceal the message of Islam, but rather to ensure its protection, stability, and effective dissemination. This strategic approach later paved the way for the Hijrah to Madinah, the establishment of the Islamic state, and the widespread expansion of Islam. The present study, entitled “The Role of Confidentiality in the Successful Da‘wah Strategy of the Prophet (PBUH) During the Makkan Period,” presents a scholarly and analytical examination of how confidentiality contributed to the success, organization, and consolidation of the Islamic mission in Makkah, and explores the guidance and lessons it offers for contemporary da‘wah movements.
